Where there is a lot of good wine, there wine spirit has to originate. This means that Armenians were, perhaps, the first ones in the world, who began producing cognac. The majority of us even now remember Armenian cognac of the highest quality, which was awarded with gold medals and received the highest ratings in the majority of international exhibitions. Armenian cognac was savoured by not only the Kremlin government, but the heads of all European Kings Palaces as well.
Greek historian Xenofont, who visited Armenia in the 5th century B.C., wrote that Armenian wine had won distinction with its especially high quality and plenty of various wine sorts. He wrote: “homemade wine is stored in huge fictile craters, dug in the ground. Wheat is floating in the wine, and they have bigger or smaller reeds stuck into them. When one wants to drink, he has to place the reed into the mouth and suck the wine through it”…
It is understandable that in the country, where not only grapes but rich variety of fruits grows, Armenians also produce various wine and vodka out of them. Straw pomegranate wine, which is especially suitable for Armenian confection, is produced according to ancient technologies.
The Armenians like to drink a splash of wine vodka of specific taste and flavor, sweet cornel (autumn cherry and cornelian berry) vodka of tender taste, and mulberry vodka of sweetish taste before the meal as a stimulating appetizer.
